	IF THOU WERT BY MY SIDE. Reginald Heber was born at Malpas, Cheshire, England, April 21, 1783. He took high honors at Oxford University, and afterward was distinguished for learning and piety. He was settled in the living of Hodnut, when he accepted the bishopric of Calcutta. He was. unwearied in his missionary work, and it was while he was travelling on the Ganges, to visit the mission stations, that the following lines to his wife were written. Bishop Heber died in India, April 23, 1S26. The music of the song was composed by Sidney Nelson.
